Lasting peace and security in the Middle East cannot be created at the wish or the direction of any outside country, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has said plainly.
He made the remarks after joining online the Global Town Hall 2026 event held recently in Indonesia. Speaking about the present state of world politics, he said with regret that when large and powerful countries break international law in their own interests, rules cease to carry any value. If major international bodies including the United Nations do not stand firm against such wrongs and attacks, he said, people will lose faith in them altogether.
Araghchi said mutual dialogue matters more now than at any time in the past if the world is to be run well. Setting out the horrors of war, he said the damage from every war does not stop at the battlefield but spreads far beyond it. Ordinary people have to pay taxes to meet the cost of war, but the heaviest price is paid in ordinary lives. People lose their lives, their blood, their homes and their futures, and are left with nothing.
Explaining where the real solution to security lies, the Iranian foreign minister said clearly that peace can never come through the military presence of a foreign power or through decisions imposed by force. To establish lasting peace in the Middle East, he said, the countries of the region must build trust among themselves, show one another respect, and sit down together to talk.
