WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has reignited controversy after sharing on his social media platform a podcast that disparaged Indian and Chinese citizens and immigrants. Trump reposted an audio podcast by U.S. political commentator Michael Savage, along with its written excerpts, on his Truth Social platform. The podcast called India and China “hell-holes.”

In his “Savage Nation” podcast, Michael Savage claimed that people from India and China come to the United States only to give birth so their children can obtain U.S. citizenship by birthright. In the post, he referred to Indian and Chinese immigrants as “laptop-toting gangsters.”

In Savage’s words, they had trampled the U.S. flag and harmed the country more than the mafia. He said it was now impossible for white people to get jobs at California tech companies because the entire system was controlled by Indians and Chinese.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Trump claimed that no country in the world other than the United States grants citizenship by birth. The claim is incorrect; about three dozen countries, including Canada and Mexico, have such rules.

The Trump administration is now pressing to end the practice in the United States. After returning to power for a second term in January, Trump signed an executive order aimed at ending automatic citizenship for children born in the United States in certain cases.

Under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, anyone born on U.S. soil is entitled to citizenship. A case challenging Trump’s executive order, “Trump v. Barbara,” is pending before the Supreme Court.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the case’s possible outcome, Trump said that if the court ruled against the country — that is, against birthright citizenship — it would cost the United States a great deal of money and, most importantly, would drag America’s prestige through the dust.

Analysts described Trump’s inflammatory post and his characterization of countries such as India and China as “hell-holes” as overtly racist. The immigrant community, in particular, found the labeling of skilled immigrants as “gangsters” deeply insulting.
