JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suffered a major political setback as former Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid joined forces to unseat him, announcing they will merge their political parties into a new election bloc.

The main aim of the new alliance is to defeat Netanyahu’s current coalition government in the general election scheduled for October 2026.

Bennett said the new political party will be called “Together.” He confirmed to media that he will personally lead the alliance.

Criticizing Netanyahu’s long tenure, Bennett said: “After 30 long years, the time has come to part ways with Netanyahu. Israel must change its current course.”

Political analysts said the Bennett-Lapid alliance presents a significant challenge for Netanyahu, who is already under pressure over the Gaza war and domestic judicial reforms. If the new bloc can unite opposition opinion, the next election could mark the end of Netanyahu’s rule.
