BANNU, Pakistan — A car bomb attack at a police outpost in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province killed 15 police officers and wounded three others, officials said. Gunmen opened fire on officers after the blast, and additional forces were deployed to bring the situation under control.
The attack took place at a police post on the outskirts of Bannu. Police official Sajjad Khan said attackers rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the post, collapsing the roof and killing officers stationed inside.
Another official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said militants entered the post after the blast and opened fire on officers. Security personnel who arrived to assist also came under ambush attack.
Police sources said the militants used drones in the assault. Rescue teams and ambulances reached the scene shortly after the attack and took the wounded to a hospital. Government hospitals in Bannu were placed on emergency footing. An alliance called Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility.
The attack has raised fears of renewed tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Islamabad has long accused militants of using Afghan soil to stage attacks inside Pakistan. The Taliban government has rejected the allegations, calling militancy a Pakistani domestic problem.
