BAGHDAD, Sept. 26 — Iraq is seeking an exemption from U.S. sanctions for Iranian flights. The office of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said Baghdad is holding direct discussions with Washington over a recent U.S. policy.

The U.S. Treasury Department policy says airports that operate or support Iranian flights may face sanctions. Iraq is trying to keep several of its airports outside the scope of the sanctions.

In a statement published Saturday, the prime minister’s office said the discussions aim to secure waivers or exemptions in a way that would allow flights to resume for medical treatment, study, religious travel and humanitarian reasons linked to ordinary citizens’ interests.

The statement said that as Iraq works to ease tensions in the region, the continuation of crises makes the situation more complicated. It urged all sides to seek solutions through dialogue and negotiations that would end the current crisis and conflict and protect the interests of the region’s countries and peoples.
