The body of Helal Uddin was recovered four days after he went missing when a trawler sank in the Meghna River at Sonargaon in Narayanganj.
Sonargaon Fire Service and Baidyerbazar river police jointly recovered the body around noon Monday, Sept. 28, near Ratanpur Bridge on the Marikhali, a branch of the Meghna River.
Helal Uddin’s brother-in-law Moktar Hossain identified the body on behalf of the family, and authorities handed it over to them.
The bodies of Helal Uddin’s two sons and daughter had been found floating near Al Mostafa Factory in Baidyerbazar on Saturday morning. Baidyerbazar river police outpost chief Shah Kamal said the recovery of Helal Uddin’s body ended the search operation.
The trawler sank in a storm around 3 p.m. Thursday in the Sonamoyi area of the Meghna River at Baidyerbazar, leaving four members of one family missing. The body of Rayesha Begum was recovered at the time.
Thirteen relatives had been traveling by trawler from Srimuddi village in Homna upazila of Cumilla to attend the wedding of Shahporan’s daughter Sajia Akter in Haria Baidyepara village of Baidyerbazar union, Sonargaon. They were carrying wedding supplies, two cows and a goat. The trawler sank near Aman Cement Company after being caught in the storm. A company trawler rescued eight people, while Rayesha Begum, Helal Uddin, Sajib Hossain, Samia Akter and Samin Hossain were reported missing. Rayesha Begum’s body was recovered about half an hour later.
Search efforts continued through Thursday night and resumed Friday morning without finding the others. The two cows and goat were found dead in the sunken trawler Friday afternoon. Fire Service and Coast Guard divers suspended the search at 8 p.m. after failing to locate the missing people. At about 8 a.m. Saturday, the bodies of Sajib Hossain, Samia Akter and Samin Hossain were found floating near Al Mostafa Factory in Baidyerbazar.
Inspector Shah Kamal handed the three siblings’ bodies to their maternal uncle Hayat Mia that day. Helal Uddin’s body was recovered and handed to the family Monday afternoon.
The body of Rayesha Begum, 55, had been handed to her elder brother Abul Kashem on Thursday night. She was the wife of Zakir Hossain of Kalikapur village in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria. Authorities have now handed all five bodies to their families.
Moktar Hossain said he received the body of his wife’s elder brother Helal Uddin from police and was taking it to Srimuddi village in Homna for burial. He had buried the bodies of his two nephews and niece after receiving them Saturday.
Shah Kamal said the bodies of all four people missing after the trawler sinking had been recovered and handed to their families, ending the operation.
