Coming from behind, Argentina staged an incredible turnaround to reach the final. Beating England 2-1, Lionel Messi’s side are in the final for the third time in 12 years. At this World Cup, Argentina have scored 19 goals in seven matches — matching that famous Brazil side of 1970.
In the group stage of this tournament, Argentina scored eight goals in three matches: three against Algeria, two against Austria and three against Jordan.
In their four knockout matches so far, they have scored 11 goals. They beat Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32, beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16, and beat Switzerland 3-1 in the quarterfinal.
In the semifinal, Argentina beat England 2-1. And with that, Scaloni’s side have matched the Brazil of 1970 in the goal-scoring record. That year, Pele’s side scored 19 goals in the whole tournament; Argentina too have now scored 19.
Argentina and the 1970 Brazil are fifth in terms of the most goals in a single World Cup. Brazil, with 22 goals in 1950, are fourth. France, who scored 23 goals at the 1958 World Cup, are third.
West Germany, with 25 goals in 1954, are second. The record for the most goals in a single World Cup belongs to Hungary, who top the list with 27 goals at the 1954 World Cup.
