Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has taken the place of the country’s opposition political party in the election that followed the July mass uprising. In this situation, a number of major amendments are coming to the party’s constitution after seven years. Under the current Amir, for the first time, a move has been taken to bring about 14 amendments, big and small. Discussions on these proposals are under way at various levels of the party. Through them, the party’s financial affairs are to be regulated, and there will also be an opportunity for people who are not party members to hold major constitutional positions, according to party sources.

Under the proposed amendments, a new sub-section will be added to Article 68 of Chapter 6 of the constitution to set limits on the spending of district and city Amirs. There is also a plan to add clearer provisions on the party’s sources of income and financial management. In addition, a new clause is proposed for Chapter 3 to form an advisory council under the central organization. Party sources further said the council might include people who are not party members but have made important contributions in various fields.

Confirming this, Jamaat secretary general Mia Golam Parwar said the 23rd amendment proposal had already been presented to the Majlis-e-Shura. After discussion in the amendment committee, the proposals were sent to the executive council and were then being discussed in the Shura, he said. He said a proposal to form an advisory council had also come, and that there had been preliminary discussion on it among Shura members.

The matter has not yet been finalized, however, and will be discussed at the next Shura meeting. Once the constitutional amendments are finalized, they will be published and also posted on the party’s website.
