Moishani Secondary Girls’ School in Nesarabad upazila, Pirojpur, officially has 120 students, 11 teachers and two staff members.

During an inspection on Tuesday (August 11), only seven students were found at the school. One was in Class 6, none were in Classes 7 or 8, and three each were present in Classes 9 and 10.

The extremely low attendance has raised questions, but a teacher blamed birth-control methods for the crisis. Assistant teacher Pankaj Kumar Mondal said: “The decline in population growth caused by birth-control methods, small families and the area’s geographical environment are responsible for the student shortage.”

The school’s 2026 SSC results were also disappointing. Only one of 11 candidates passed this year; in 2025, one of eight candidates passed. In two years, only two of 19 candidates passed.

After reports on the school’s SSC results were published on August 10, the issue drew attention in Nesarabad and Pirojpur. During Tuesday’s visit, media workers found that although records listed 120 students, only a handful regularly attended classes.

This raised questions about where the remaining 113 students were and how the school could record 120 students when no more than seven or eight usually attended.

Acting headteacher Parshiya Rani Halder also cited the unsafe building, problems with washrooms and the inability to retain students. At least 10 to 12 candidates must be shown for the SSC examination. For that reason, several students who failed the test examination at nearby Saptagram Sammilani School were allowed to fill out forms and sit for the SSC examination.

Upazila secondary education officer Md Zahirul Alam told the media: “Eleven students from the school sat for the SSC examination and one passed. I also know that students from another school were brought in to sit for the examination. Written information will be sought from the school authorities.”
