Police have arrested former Member of Parliament Nayeb Ali Joardar of the Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency. He was arrested at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday from his home in the Arappura Jamtala Model Mosque Para area of the town, his family confirmed.

Family sources said police, led by the Shailkupa police station officer-in-charge, surrounded Nayeb Ali’s residence in Arappura at night. He was subsequently arrested in connection with a sabotage case and taken away. He was sent to jail through the court on Saturday afternoon.

A separate reliable source said the former MP of Jhenaidah-1, a member of the banned Awami League, was arrested on the directive of police headquarters based on intelligence that he had been maintaining regular contact with fugitive former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and was planning to create unrest in the area.

Shailkupa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir Molla declined to comment on the arrest when contacted by phone.
