Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered former Prime Minister Imran Khan transferred from prison to a hospital, local media reported Tuesday.
The court’s order comes amid concern over Imran’s physical condition. Former Pakistani President Arif Alvi had earlier claimed that Imran Khan’s medical reports were “worrying.”
In a post on social media platform X, Alvi said he had reviewed Imran’s medical reports with several experts.
According to him, the reports show the most serious concerns are Imran’s level of anxiety and mental stress, an elevated heart rate, and high blood pressure.
Alvi said the reports did not mention any sleep problems for Imran, but that the medications he is taking suggest sleep issues nonetheless.
Arif Alvi said he has known Imran Khan for more than 35 years.
In his view, mental stress was never Imran’s weak point, but that stress has now reached its highest level. Alvi said this is evidence of the toll taken by nearly three years of imprisonment and complete isolation.
The former president also noted that Imran’s heart rate is 54 beats per minute. While doctors describe this as normal, Alvi claimed it is not normal for Imran specifically.
Alvi has recommended immediate use of a 24-hour Holter monitor to track Imran’s heart activity, along with daily monitoring of his blood pressure.
Alvi further said Imran Khan needs to be moved to a hospital immediately, where he should be treated under the supervision of an independent panel of doctors. He said Imran’s family and the people of Pakistan do not have confidence in doctors appointed solely by the government.
Meanwhile, members of Imran’s family have repeatedly voiced concern over being unable to meet with him or gain adequate access to him.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023. Concern over his health has grown further in recent times. Following the court’s latest order, whether he will now receive treatment in a hospital setting has become the key question.
