13 more children die of measles symptoms in 24 hours, toll reaches 512

Thirteen more children have died of measles and measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours from 8 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday, the Directorate General of Health Services said. The deaths bring the toll to 512 children since March 15.

Another 1,967 children developed measles symptoms across the country in the same period, according to the directorate’s daily bulletin released Saturday.

Of the 13 who died, one was confirmed to have measles. The other 12 died with various measles-like symptoms, the directorate said. The deaths included two children in Barishal — one confirmed measles case and one with measles symptoms — four with symptoms in Dhaka, four in Sylhet, two in Chattogram and one in Mymensingh. With the latest deaths, 512 children have died of measles or measles-like symptoms since March 15. Another 1,967 children developed symptoms across the country in the past 24 hours.

The bulletin said 62,507 children have shown measles symptoms across the country since March 15. Of those, 49,389 were hospitalized with severe complications. So far, 45,011 have recovered and returned home. The rest are still being treated at hospitals across the country.

Doctors have urged parents to ensure their children receive measles vaccinations and to contact the nearest health center immediately if any symptoms appear.
