Bangladesh measles outbreak kills nearly 700 children in 103 days, health authorities say

Nine more children died from measles in Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, bringing the total death toll since 15 March to 698, according to a bulletin issued by the control room of the Directorate General of Health Services.

In the same 24-hour period, 893 people were identified with suspected measles symptoms and 52 cases of confirmed measles were recorded — a total of 945 new cases. Since the outbreak began on 15 March and through to 8am on 25 June — a period of 103 days — a total of 107,150 people have been affected by confirmed or suspected measles, the Directorate said.

Of the 698 deaths recorded over this period, 93 were confirmed measles fatalities. The remaining 605 deaths involved patients presenting with measles-like symptoms. A total of 80,497 people have been hospitalised and 76,788 discharged over the same period, out of 96,653 suspected and 11,442 confirmed cases.

The nine children who died in the most recent 24-hour period were all from Dhaka division. Dhaka division has recorded the highest cumulative death toll, with 319 deaths — 57 confirmed measles fatalities and 262 symptomatic deaths. Rajshahi division follows with 90 total deaths, Sylhet with 78, Chittagong with 60, Barisal with 58, Mymensingh with 57, Khulna with 27 symptomatic deaths, and Rangpur with 8.
