Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has strongly condemned and protested against the attack on the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) “July march” programme in Habiganj, in which the party’s senior leaders Sarjis Alam and Nasiruddin Patwari and other leaders and workers were targeted.

Chhatra Shibir’s central president, Nurul Islam, and secretary general, Sibgatullah, made the protest in a joint statement on Tuesday (28 July).

In the statement they said that in the new democratic and healthy political environment created in the country on the basis of the aspirations of the July uprising, all political parties have the full right to carry out peaceful programmes. But they alleged that what they called extremist cadres of the BNP and Chhatra Dal had launched a sudden attack on the NCP’s peaceful programme in Habiganj.

Chhatra Shibir claimed that in the attack the NCP media team’s microbus, several vehicles belonging to journalists, and state property inside the district Circuit House were vandalised. It also said journalists’ mobile phones and cameras were snatched and that journalists were attacked and injured. The leaders described the incident as “an attempt to revive fascism.”

The statement also said such violence was not happening for the first time. It referred to an earlier incident in Jhenaidah in which eggs were thrown at the NCP leader Nasiruddin Patwari and he was attacked after coming out from Friday prayers. The leaders also referred to a bomb explosion at an NCP rally following a scheduled march in Savar. Through these incidents, the Chhatra Shibir leaders claimed, a particular group is trying to destabilise the country again.

They further said that since the fall of what they called fascism, the reckless behaviour, occupation of property, extortion, attacks, violence against women and violence against political opponents by the BNP and its associate organisations in various parts of the country were a matter of concern. They also said such activities run counter to the spirit of the July uprising and to national unity.

The statement called on the senior leadership of the BNP and Chhatra Dal to identify those involved in the attack and take strict organisational action within their parties. The two Chhatra Shibir leaders also demanded that exemplary punishment be ensured for those involved under the existing law.

The allegations set out above were made in a statement by Chhatra Shibir. BD Global Times has not independently established them, and no response from the BNP or Chhatra Dal was available in the statement.
