Sheikh Ali bin Abdur Rahman Al-Huzaifi, imam and khatib of the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, delivered this year’s Hajj sermon at Masjid al-Namira on the plain of Arafat in Mecca. In the sermon, he called on Muslims to refrain from acts that divide the community.
Sheikh Huzaifi delivered the sermon to pilgrims gathered on the plain of Arafat on Saudi Arabia local time on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. “O believers! Fear Allah and hold fast to taqwa. O believers! Fulfill your covenants,” he said.
Holding to taqwa is a defining trait of believers, he said. None may be associated with Allah, and none other than Him may be worshipped. Acting on tawhid is a defining trait of believers, he said. When Allah’s verses and signs are presented to believers, their hearts soften.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the final messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets, Sheikh Huzaifi said.
Addressing pilgrims, he said Muslims should adopt patience in every hardship. Allah has promised great reward for the patient, he said. He urged worshippers to speak truth always, refrain from lies, and stay away from innovation in religion and backbiting.
He urged constant prayers for forgiveness, remembrance of Allah, the observance of prayer, and gratitude for divine blessings.
The senior imam of the Prophet’s Mosque said nations that have oppressed and shown ingratitude have had their blessings taken away. The relationship between Allah and his servants is the path to salvation, he said. He called on believers to keep that relationship firm, and to refrain from disputes during the Hajj.
The patient will be given good news of paradise, he said. He called for abundant prayer on this day and for restraint from acts that harm community unity. Pilgrims should perform the Hajj rituals to the highest standard, he said.
In his closing prayers, the imam of the Prophet’s Mosque said: “O Allah! Have mercy on the condition of Muslims. You alone accept prayers. O Allah! Forgive our sins. O Allah! Better the condition of Muslims. O Allah! Accept our deeds. O Allah! Grant us guidance.”
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims listened to the sermon on the plain of Arafat. The sermon’s message of peace, tolerance and mutual respect resonated through the Muslim community, with special prayers for the problems and crises facing the Muslim world. After the sermon, pilgrims combined the Zuhr and Asr prayers at Masjid al-Namira.
