Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Amin Ur Rashid Yasin has said the “ghosts of autocracy” are still lying in wait and would wreck the country if given the chance. He made the remarks as chief guest at a “July memoir” discussion held at the Cumilla Shilpakala Academy on Saturday night.

The minister said: “I do not know whether I could have stood here and spoken today had there been no 2024 mass uprising. Those who were in power then were not elected by the people’s vote; they staged a sham election with the people. Followers of the fascists are still hiding around us. Given the chance, they will engage in conspiracies to destabilise the country.”

Remembering those killed in the July mass uprising, he said: “I pray for the salvation of the souls of all who were martyred in the 2024 mass uprising. The government is taking the necessary measures for the treatment of the injured.”

Cumilla City Corporation Administrator and metropolitan BNP leader Yusuf Molla Tipu spoke as the chief speaker at the event.

The event was moderated by Abu Raihan, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s Cumilla metropolitan unit, and chaired by Saifur Sagar, editor of Face the People. Special guests included Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Rozy Akter, Civil Surgeon Dr Ali Noor Mohammad Bashir, Additional Superintendent of Police AKM Kamruzzaman, and members of martyr families and injured people from the July mass uprising.
