The government has decided to recruit 100,000 health workers within the next year. Alongside this, a further 25,000 midwives will be recruited over the next three years to ensure better care for pregnant mothers at upazila hospitals and grassroots-level health centres.
Dr S M Ziauddin Haider, the prime minister’s special assistant for health affairs, gave the information at a briefing for journalists at the Secretariat on Sunday, after returning home from a visit to Lisbon, Portugal.
Dr Ziauddin Haider said that, before recruiting such a large number of midwives, special emphasis would be placed on their training to raise the quality of care at field level. The government had already taken the necessary steps to improve the quality of training, he said.
Referring to the government’s new plan for grassroots health-care infrastructure, he said a strong ‘primary health care network’ would be built at the union level across the country. Under this new network, the existing community clinics and their health workers would deliver care by going directly to people’s homes.
No community clinic in the country would be shut down, however, the prime minister’s special assistant made clear.
He said the community clinics would keep operating as they are. The new primary health care network would work to widen the scope of services further and bring treatment to people’s doorsteps.
