State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam has said a penalty provision has been established for charging battery-powered auto-rickshaws from any source other than solar power. Additionally, auto-rickshaws charged from non-solar sources will not be granted registration, and those already registered will not have their registration renewed if found doing so.
He made the remarks to reporters Monday around 11 a.m. following a review meeting on solar power usage across departments, agencies, and institutions under the Local Government Division and the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division.
The state minister said: “We are bringing battery-powered auto-rickshaws under city corporation and municipality registration under the Local Government Ministry. Certain conditions will be attached there, requiring that any charging they use must come from solar power.”
He said BRTA will no longer handle auto-rickshaw registration — city corporations and municipalities will handle it instead. A law on this matter has been passed in the National Parliament, and regulations are being drafted based on that law. The regulations will determine registration fees, renewal fees, and other conditions.
On the fitness of battery-powered rickshaws, he said obtaining a fitness certificate from BUET or the automobile division of a government polytechnic institute at the district level will be made mandatory for registration and renewal. After obtaining the fitness certificate, it must be countersigned by traffic police before being submitted to the city corporation or municipality.
