A mobile court in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon has jailed and fined the owner of a lime factory for stealing gas through an illegal connection. The drive was conducted on Thursday (11 June) afternoon as part of a special operation by the regional sales division to identify and disconnect illegal gas connections across various areas of Sonargaon.
During the drive, evidence of illegal gas use was found at a lime factory in the Ichhapara area of Sonargaon municipality. The mobile court then detained the factory’s owner, Md Abu Bakkar (26), proprietor of M/s Pranto Traders. The investigation found he had been using gas for a long time through an unauthorised connection — tantamount to theft of state property — and he was convicted under section 12(1) of the Bangladesh Gas Act, 2010. Narayanganj district administration assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Suha Tabil sentenced him to 10 days’ simple imprisonment and a 5,000-taka fine through the mobile court.
Executive magistrate Suha Tabil said the government is taking a tough stance against theft of state-property gas and illegal connections, that regular drives are being conducted to identify illegal users, and that such operations will continue. Gas division officials and law-enforcement members took part in the drive, during which several illegal gas connections in the area were also disconnected.
