A case has been filed over the inhuman beating of a nine-year-old boy at a madrasa in Khulna. The boy’s father filed the case at Sonadanga police station on Monday night. The case, filed under section 70 of the Children Act 2013, names the madrasa teacher, Hafez Abdur Rahman, as the accused.

The teacher, Abdur Rahman, severely beat the boy on the night of June 17 for failing to learn his lessons at the madrasa, the Nurul Quran Tahfiz Academy, located in the Doctorpara area of Sonadanga in the city. As a result, blood clotted in the child’s brain, eyes and various other parts of his body. An illustrated report on the incident was published online by the newspaper Samakal on June 21 and in its print edition the next day, and the child’s photograph and the extent of the abuse sparked sharp criticism in various quarters.

According to the boy’s father, he was not informed even 24 hours after the beating and took the child to hospital two days later. The boy was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital for two days, where doctors said that if the blood in his brain did not clear with medication, an operation would be needed. The father demanded justice for the brutal abuse.

The officer-in-charge of Sonadanga police station, Rafiqul Islam, said the madrasa teacher had been absconding since the incident and had also been expelled from the madrasa. An operation to arrest him had begun, the OC said, adding that he hoped the teacher would be arrested soon.
