The Anwarpur-Sunamganj road in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj has been submerged by continuous rainfall and hill flash floods coming down from India. As a result, tourists, office-goers, traders and other ordinary people travelling to and from Tahirpur and Sunamganj are facing suffering.
The road went under from Sunday morning, June 21, as water came down with great force through the Jadukata river. Even so, vehicles are still moving on it. The water of the Jadukata and other border rivers in the upazila is also flowing downstream with great force, it was learnt on inquiry.
BNP leader Jubayer Zainal said that whenever a hill flash flood comes, vehicles and people travelling on the road face suffering. With the amount of water rising and the continuing rain, there are fears the situation in the lowlands could worsen.
Rati Mia, president of the Anwarpur Bazar Traders’ Association, said the hill flash flood coming down through the Jadukata river flows downstream through the Rakti and Boulai rivers. Because of the large volume of water, and with no other route for it to drain, the road goes under and traffic is disrupted.
Mamun Howlader, executive engineer of the Sunamganj Water Development Board, said the water was rising but was flowing below the danger level at all points in Sunamganj. However, there were fears of a temporary flood situation in the district’s lowlands.
