Tannery owners at the BSCIC leather estate in Savar collected nearly 550,000 raw sacrificial hides over three days, while warehouse owners outside the tanneries preserved another 100,000.
BSCIC leather estate executive engineer Mehrajul Maiyan confirmed the figures on Saturday afternoon, saying a total of 550,000 raw hides had entered the tanneries over the three days from Eid day on Thursday to Saturday morning.
He said that by 10 a.m. on Saturday, 1,712 trucks had brought hides into the tanneries — 511,540 cattle and buffalo hides and 16,136 goat and sheep hides.
Raw hides were still seen arriving by truck at the BSCIC estate tanneries in Harindhara of Savar’s Tentuljhora union on Saturday morning. From the afternoon of Eid day, vehicles loaded with rawhide had begun arriving from Dhaka and surrounding areas, and tannery owners spent a busy time collecting them, work that continued on Saturday. Workers were seen processing the collected hides with salt.
Manik, a selector at Mitali Tannery in the estate, said his tannery had collected about 20,000 raw hides, now being cleaned and preserved with salt so they do not spoil. Tannery owners said various orphanages and madrasas in Dhaka and seasonal traders bring their collected rawhide directly to the Savar estate, where the tanneries quickly salt and scientifically preserve them.
