DHAKA — A Dhaka court has granted a seven-day remand for former chief justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque in a case filed over verdict forgery. The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court issued the order Wednesday.

The order was issued in a case filed at Shahbagh police station in the capital.

Police had earlier sought a 10-day remand in the case. No lawyer appeared for Khairul Haque at the hearing.

Khairul Haque was arrested by police on July 24. He was appointed the country’s 19th chief justice on Sept. 27, 2010, with his term taking effect on Sept. 30 of that year. He retired on May 17 the following year.

Khairul Haque was chairman of the Law Commission in the final days of the Awami League government. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in the student-public uprising of Aug. 5 last year, he resigned from the Law Commission on Aug. 13 and has not been seen in public since. Several of his rulings were intensely debated. He himself received various benefits during the Awami League’s rule. He was made chief justice over several senior judges. While chief justice, he was criticized for taking relief fund money for his own medical treatment. A few days before retirement, he scrapped the caretaker government system in the 13th Amendment case, opening the way for political conflict in the country and creating the final opportunity for what critics called Sheikh Hasina’s vote rigging.
