Six men have been accused of secretly slaughtering six horses in the abandoned drying yard of a rice mill in Gaibandha’s Sadullapur upazila and trying to sell the meat as beef. Locals detained the six men over the alleged scheme and handed them to police, residents said. The incident triggered a tense standoff as an angry crowd gathered.
The episode took place Friday morning, June 12, at Khordda Rasulpur (Mongla Bandar) in Jamalpur union of the upazila.
Those arrested are Mominur Rahman, Mintu Mia, Hridoy Hossen, Rajib Hossen, Mamun Mia and Jobaidur Rahman. Their homes are in various districts.
Locals said the men had secretly slaughtered six horses in the drying yard belonging to Khairul Islam, son of the late Fazlu Master of Mongla Bandar in Khordda Rasulpur, and were trying to sell the horse meat as beef. After the activity was noticed, those involved were detained and police were informed.
The angry crowd also vandalized the tin fencing of the drying yard. Police later arrived at the scene and calmed the situation.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmudul Hasan, Officer-in-Charge A.K.M. Habibur Rahman Habib, livestock officer Sirajul Islam, union parishad chairman Zahid Hasan Shuvo and member Nurunnabi Pradhan, among others, rushed to the spot.
Sadullapur police Officer-in-Charge A.K.M. Habibur Rahman said a force was sent to the scene after the report came in. After the situation was brought under control, the UNO conducted a mobile court, he said.
Sadullapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahmudul Hasan said: “Based on proof of the allegation, two of those involved were sentenced to six months in jail and four to three months as legal action, and each was fined Tk 25,000.”
