A court in Satkhira has sentenced a man named Md Roushan Sheikh, 55, to life imprisonment with hard labour for raping a teenage girl. He was also fined Tk 1 lakh, in default of which he will serve a further six months in prison. Judge Abu Bakar Siddique of the Satkhira Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Tuesday (September 29).
Roushan, the convict, lives in the Ganeshpur area under Patkelghata police station in Satkhira.
According to the case details, the incident took place at around 4pm on May 22, 2025, near Ganeshpur bazar in Patkelghata. While the girl was on her way to private tuition, Roushan Sheikh called her over and took her behind his tea stall. Saying he would give her food, he took her into a nearby poultry farm and raped her. After the girl told her family, her father filed the case at Patkelghata police station on May 23.
After investigation, the investigating officer pressed charges against Roushan Sheikh. The judge took testimony from 11 witnesses, including the complainant and a doctor. After reviewing the evidence, the court found him guilty under section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000, and sentenced him to life imprisonment with hard labour and a fine of Tk 1 lakh, or six more months in prison in default.
Public prosecutor Sheikh Alamgir Ashraf confirmed the verdict.
