A maximum effort is underway to turn the national parliament into an entertainment centre, said Ahmad Abdul Kaiyum, assistant secretary general of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and president of its Dhaka City South unit. He made the remarks in a statement on Friday.
Ahmad Abdul Kaiyum said people earned money through hard toil, setting aside concern for their own lives. Expatriates went thousands of miles from their loved ones to send their hard-earned money home.
The state, he said, is run on taxes levied on that money. “Since the parliamentary session began, the people’s money has been wasted on all sorts of pointless talk. It seems a maximum effort is underway to turn the national parliament into an entertainment centre.”
The city president added that MPs should remember that nearly Tk 3 lakh is spent every minute of a parliamentary session.
“The people have entrusted the state’s resources to them. Are they considering whether, by betraying that trust, they are earning the people’s curse?” he said. “We want to see parliament as an effective legislature. Relevant issues are being pushed aside by irrelevant discussion. We seek the prime minister’s effective intervention in these matters.”
