All 36 BNP nominations for reserved seats found valid

DHAKA — The Election Commission on Thursday declared valid all 36 nomination papers filed by the BNP-led alliance for the reserved women’s seats in the 13th Parliament.

Scrutiny of nomination papers began Thursday morning at the Election Commission in Agargaon in the capital. The commission later declared the nominations of the BNP alliance’s 36 candidates valid.

The commission also provisionally accepted the nomination of independent alliance nominee Sultana Jasmin. However, the nominations of three independents — Mahbuba Rahman, Sharmin Akhter and Mehrun Nesa — were rejected.

Returning officers said those whose nominations were rejected may file appeals by April 26.

NCP leader Monira Sharmin has been given until noon Thursday to submit required documents.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the names of the 36 candidates Monday, April 20.

They are Selima Rahman, Shirin Sultana, Rasheda Begum Hira, Rehana Akhter Ranu, Newaz Halima Arli, Mst. Farida Yasmin, Bilkis Islam, Sakila Farzana, Helen Jerin Khan, Nilofar Chowdhury Moni, Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Jiba Amina Khan, Mahmuda Habiba, Mst. Sabira Sultana, Sansila Jebrin, Sanjida Islam Tuli, Sultana Ahmed, Fahmida Haque, Anna Minz, Subarna Sikdar (Thakur), Shamim Ara Begum Swapna, Mosammat Shammi Akhter, Ferdousi Ahmed, Bithika Binte Hossain, Mst. Suraiya Jerin, Mansura Akhter, Joharat Adib Chowdhury, Mamtaj Alo, Fahima Nasrin, Arifa Sultana, Mst. Sanjida Yasmin, Nadia Pathan Papon, Showkat Ara Akhter, Madhabi Marma, Selina Sultana and Rezeka Sultana.

Under the announced schedule, the last day for submitting nominations was April 21 and scrutiny was held on April 22 and 23. Appeals against rejected nominations open April 26 and will be resolved on April 27 and 28.

April 29 is the last day for withdrawing nominations and April 30 for symbol allocation. The 13th Parliament’s reserved-seat election will be held on May 12.
