A truck driver, Abbas Hossain, 40, has been killed after being run over by a speeding bus in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah. The accident happened at around 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, in the Bardaha Bridge area of the upazila. Abbas Hossain was a resident of the Churamonkati area of Jashore.
According to eyewitnesses and police, Abbas had stopped his truck by the roadside near Bardaha Bridge in the morning and gone to a local shop for tea. After finishing his tea, he was crossing the road to return to his vehicle when a speeding bus named ‘Rupsa Paribahan,’ heading from Khulna towards Kushtia, ran him over, killing him on the spot.
On being informed, Shailkupa fire service personnel quickly reached the scene and recovered the body, which was later sent to the morgue of Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. Jahanur Ali, in charge of Arappur Highway police station, said the bus had fled quickly after the accident. The body had been recovered and sent to the morgue, he said, and police were working to identify the bus and its driver. Further legal steps in the matter were under way.
