A resident student at Dhaka University’s Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall has alleged being summoned to hall provost Professor Dr Ilias Al Mamun’s office, assaulted, and coerced into signing a confession, in connection with a Facebook post the student made about the quality of food served at the hall.
The Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir made the allegation at a press conference Monday, August 17. According to the organization, when students subsequently went to the administration demanding to see CCTV footage of the incident, activists from Chhatra Dal’s Shahidullah Hall and Fazlul Huq Hall units attacked them. The organization said the attack left Fazlul Huq Hall’s Vice President Khondaker Md Abu Naeem, General Secretary Imamul Hasan, and 20 to 30 other students injured and hospitalized.
Mohiuddin Khan, president of Shibir’s Dhaka University unit, alleged that the student’s mobile phone was confiscated and that he was subjected to roughly an hour and a half of physical and psychological abuse. He said the student was then intimidated into signing a written statement.
A denial of the allegations, or a response from the university administration, could not immediately be obtained.
Shibir has demanded the provost’s resignation and punishment, the dismissal of staff involved, action against the attackers, and guarantees of a safe campus environment.
