A Dhaka court has ordered that Mehedi Hasan, arrested in a case over the alleged setting on fire of a tafsir (commentary) of the holy Quran in the Dhaka University area, be sent to jail. The court also asked the investigating officer to submit an investigation report by August 17.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order on Friday (July 10) afternoon. Earlier, Shahbag police sub-inspector Nazmul Hasan, the investigating officer, had produced Mehedi Hasan before the court and sought to keep him in jail, telling the court that the accused should be held until the investigation was complete in the interest of a proper inquiry, and that a remand application would be made later. The accused was not brought into the courtroom that day, prosecution SI Shah Alam said, adding that there was no remand or bail application.

According to the case statement, three volumes of “Tafhimul Quran,” written by Sayyid Abul A’la Maududi, were set on fire late Thursday night at the foot of the western side of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University. A crowd at the scene detained the young man, accusing him of hurting Muslims’ religious sentiments. On being informed, Nilkhet police outpost sub-inspector Kamal Uddin Mia reached the scene with a force and took the accused into custody. As the accused was slightly injured in beating by the agitated crowd, he was given first aid at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. SI Kamal Uddin Mia filed the case at Shahbag police station under section 295-A of the Penal Code.
