DHAKA — Authorities have tightened security at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital and at all other airports in Bangladesh following an intelligence warning about possible militant attacks on key installations, sources said Monday.
Surveillance at sensitive sites within Shahjalal airport has been stepped up in particular, according to airport sources. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) issued a high-level alert following an advisory from police headquarters, and all law enforcement units stationed at airports have been directed to take special security measures.
Security has been reinforced around key installations both inside and outside the airport. Intelligence surveillance has been increased, and additional uniformed and plainclothes personnel have been deployed. Screening of passengers and luggage has been intensified at both arrivals and departures.
A senior CAAB official said no specific security threat had been identified so far, but that the measures had been taken as a precaution. “We routinely take such steps to ensure security,” he said. “But under the current circumstances, they have been further reinforced.”
The official said overnight security has also been tightened at airports where no flights operate at night. Strict orders have been issued to ensure there are no gaps in screening at airport entry points, and personnel have been instructed to act immediately and report to senior authorities at the first sign of anything unusual.
Bangladesh Police recently issued an intelligence alert about possible attacks on key government and state installations across the country. The warning was issued on April 23 in an official letter signed by the deputy inspector general (confidential) at police headquarters.
