Secondary-level mid-term examinations and HSC exams are currently underway across Bangladesh. Amid these exams, severe load-shedding has hit Bhola’s Lalmohan upazila, with 14 to 16 hours of daily power cuts reported.

On Sunday (July 5) around 11am, students at Bangla Bazar Mahmudiya Dakhil Madrasa in Charvuta union were seen taking examinations by candlelight.

Local teachers said when the power went out during the exam, they had no choice but to light candles so students could continue writing. “The students are already under pressure during exams. On top of that, there’s no electricity, no fans — it’s unbearable,” one teacher said.

Lalmohan Palli Bidyut zonal office deputy general manager Mahmudul Hasan said power lines have been faulting over the past two days due to natural calamities. “Our workers are trying to fix the issues. Continuous drizzle and wind are causing tree branches to fall on power lines. Softened soil from the rain is also causing trees to topple. Otherwise, there is no scheduled load-shedding,” he said.
