12 Jahangirnagar University students suspended for ragging freshers

Jahangirnagar University has temporarily expelled 12 students for ragging freshers, the university administration announced.

An office order signed by acting registrar ABM Azizur Rahman on Saturday night (July 4) said students from the history department’s 54th batch had ragged freshers of the 55th batch under the pretext of “teaching manners” between 11pm and 2am on the night of July 3.

The order said the incident violated Section 5(e) of the university’s Student Discipline Ordinance 2018, which prohibits teasing, ragging, or participating in any form of harassment in halls, departments, or anywhere on university premises. The students were suspended under Section 4(1)(b) of the same ordinance.

The suspended students are: Subhashish Roy Pranto, Nasim Uddin Majumder, Abu Abtahi Anik, Naimul Hasan, Abdullah Mahdi, Isfaq Hadi, Raihan Khan, Kazi Shah Jamsed Alam Nabil, Saifullah Mansur Anan, Mahfuzur Rahman Anto, Kartik Chandra Roy, and Naeem Ahmed Sajib.

According to the university, 13 freshers from the 55th batch were called to the School and College field on the night of July 3 and subjected to ragging. The proctorial team conducted an immediate operation and detained the 12 accused students. The victims subsequently filed written complaints with the proctor, and the accused admitted their involvement in writing.
