Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has taken the oath of office as president. He was sworn in at Bangabhaban on Friday evening. Acting Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal administered the oath. The prime minister, cabinet members, civil and military officials, and other dignitaries attended the ceremony.
At the start of the ceremony, Mufti Maulana Saiful Kabir, pesh imam of Bangabhaban Jame Masjid, recited verse 10 of Surah Al-Fath from the Quran.
The meaning of the verse: O Prophet, those who pledged allegiance to you were, in truth, pledging allegiance to Allah. Allah’s hand was over their hands. Whoever breaks his pledge does so to his own detriment, and whoever fulfills the covenant he has made with Allah, Allah will soon grant him a great reward.
After the president took the oath, four new members were sworn in to the cabinet led by Prime Minister Tareque Rahman. New President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir administered their oath.
The four sworn in were: Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of the BNP’s standing committee and MP for Narsingdi-2; Barrister Andaleeve Rahman Partho, chairman of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) and MP for Bhola-1; Saching Prue Jerry, MP for Bandarban; and Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln, MP for Gaibandha-4.
