Following the resignation of President Md Sahabuddin, discussion is under way in political circles over who will be the country’s next president. In this situation, BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the party’s next decision will be taken at a meeting of the national standing committee.
According to several responsible BNP sources, discussion is going on at the party’s top level about the election of a new president. So far, however, no formal meeting of the national standing committee has been held on the matter.
The sources say serious consideration is being given to nominating a member of the national standing committee — the party’s highest policy-making forum — rather than someone from outside the BNP, for the office of president. No final decision has been taken.
Since the government was formed, the names of several senior BNP leaders have been under discussion for the presidency. Among the possibilities are Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan. The names of cabinet secretary Nasimul Gani and a former chief justice have also come up in discussion recently.
Party sources further said the list of possibilities has now narrowed considerably, taking into account various realities and questions of physical fitness. In this situation the name of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is gaining fresh importance. A section of the BNP is said to be keen to see him in the office of president.
The BNP has said, however, that the final decision on choosing a candidate for president will be taken at the meeting of the party’s national standing committee.
