Islamic scholar Shaykh Ahmadullah, chairman of the As-Sunnah Foundation, said society does not need the kind of success that makes people forget their parents’ love, or that leaves no time even to sit by a dying mother’s side with a handful of water for her.

In a Facebook post, he wrote: “Seven or eight days ago, an elderly woman died and decomposed in her home like a garbage dump. One of her sons is a BUET teacher, another is a joint secretary, and another lives in Canada. The summit of so-called success that most parents in this country dream of seeing their children reach — all three of this woman’s sons had touched that golden peak of worldly success.”

“But an Eid passed in the meantime, and the children, chasing their careers, perhaps did not even get the chance to find out whether their mother was alive or dead. The elderly woman died alone in her home, the flesh falling from her body.”

“We do not need success that makes us forget our parents’ love, success that leaves no time even to sit by a dying mother’s side with a handful of water for her.”

“As long as we chase only materialism and worldly success, setting aside faith, values, ethics and the lessons of becoming a good human being, we will keep witnessing such unwanted incidents.”

“Let us become good human beings before we become educated. Let us raise our children to be good human beings before we make them educated.”
