Five people have been killed in a shooting in northern Michigan. Police launched an extensive search for the suspect and later found his body near a lake. Michigan State Police confirmed the details in a statement posted on social media.
Police said one person was also injured in the shooting and is being treated in hospital. The individual remains in critical condition.
State police said officers were dispatched to a home in Missaukee County at approximately 11:40 a.m. local time after receiving reports of gunfire. They found three people dead and a fourth person injured at the scene.
Police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Chad Hickman. He had fled the scene before officers arrived, prompting an extensive search. During the search, investigators discovered the body of another victim at a second residence.
Officers later located Hickman’s vehicle near Whitlock Lake, adjacent to a wooded area. Police said Hickman and one other person were found dead at the location.
Lieutenant Ashley Miller of the Michigan State Police said in a statement: “This incident is heartbreaking for the community and extremely difficult for the officers involved in the investigation.” Police have not released the names, ages, or genders of the victims.
