A husband and wife from Chougachha have been killed in a road accident in Jashore. Around 11am on Sunday (9 August), they were seriously injured in a head-on collision between their motorcycle and an easy-bike in front of the main gate of Jashore Cantonment. The wife later died while under treatment at Jashore 250-bed General Hospital, while the husband died in the afternoon on the way to Dhaka for better treatment.
The dead are Abdur Rashid, 36, son of Ismail Hossen of Madhabpur village in Swarupdaha union of Chougachha upazila, and his wife Sabira Khatun, 33. Abdur Rashid currently lived in Ward 8 of Chougachha municipal town and had long worked abroad.
According to local and hospital sources, Abdur Rashid set out for Jashore town on Sunday morning by motorcycle with his wife to see a doctor. Around 11:30am, as they reached the front of the cantonment’s main gate in Jashore Sadar upazila, their motorcycle collided head-on with an easy-bike coming from the opposite direction. The force of the collision threw the motorcycle onto the road and both were seriously injured.
On getting news of the accident, Jashore Fire Service members quickly reached the scene and rescued the injured, who were taken to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital. There the doctor on duty declared Sabira Khatun dead after examination, while Abdur Rashid, in a critical condition, was referred to Dhaka for better treatment. Relatives set out to take him to Dhaka quickly, but he died on the way before reaching the capital.
The deaths of two family members in the same accident within hours have plunged the family into deep grief, and mourning has spread in the area. Neighbours, relatives and residents offered condolences and demanded effective measures to prevent road accidents and stronger safety on risky roads. Jashore Kotwali police station’s officer-in-charge, Masum Khan, confirmed the accident.
