An 11-party alliance held a large rally and procession in Jashore on Wednesday to mark July Uprising Day.
The program began at Zero Point Court intersection and drew leaders and activists from political and social organizations. A procession later traveled through major city roads and ended at Monihar intersection.
Jashore Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Jashore-4 lawmaker Prof. Golam Rasul said the uprising was not the movement of a single party but a collective struggle by young people and the public.
He alleged that about 1,600 young people had died in the anti-authoritarian movement and that BNP and Islamist-party activists had faced disappearances, torture and executions during more than 15 and a half years of struggle. Those were political claims made by the speaker.
Rasul said justice for those responsible for killings was not yet visible and called for trials of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her associates. He also alleged that discrimination, partisan influence and corruption were re-emerging and urged swift implementation of the relevant ordinance after public support in a referendum.
Other Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis leaders addressed the rally, which was conducted by district Jamaat assistant secretary Rezaul Karim.
