The race for the Golden Boot has heated up before the World Cup semifinals. According to the latest figures, as of July 12 France’s Kylian Mbappé and Argentina’s Lionel Messi are joint top of the scorers’ list, both on eight goals.

But Mbappé is ahead on the tiebreaker, because along with his eight goals he has three assists, to Messi’s two. Mbappé has also achieved this in 563 minutes on the pitch, while Messi has played 608 minutes.

Third in the Golden Boot race is Norway’s Erling Haaland, on seven goals. But with Norway knocked out in the quarterfinals, he has no chance to add to his tally.

Fourth, jointly, are England’s Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, each on six goals and one assist. But having played fewer minutes (574), Bellingham is ahead of Kane (627 minutes).

Only Argentina, France, England and Spain now remain in the tournament, so Mbappé, Messi, Bellingham and Kane all have the chance to add to their goals in the semifinals and a possible final and win the Golden Boot.

It is worth noting that, under FIFA rules, when two or more players have scored the same number of goals, the number of assists is considered first. If assists are also equal, the player who has spent less time on the pitch is ranked ahead.
