Mother and two daughters killed in Lakshmipur; suspect dies after mob beating

Three members of a family were found hacked to death and one daughter critically injured in a rented house on the Dhankhata bank of the Dakatia river in Raipur municipality, Lakshmipur, on Thursday morning (June 25) at around 9am, police said.

The victims who died are: Shahinur Begum, 38; her eldest daughter Sayma Akhter, 21, who was a student at Dhaka University; and the family’s nine-year-old daughter. A 17-year-old daughter was found critically wounded and transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The family were originally from Laittra village, Homna municipality, Comilla district, and had been renting in Lakshmipur for several years. Their late father was a street vendor from the same Comilla address.

Local residents seized a man on suspicion of carrying out the attack and handed him over to police after a severe beating. He was admitted to Lakshmipur District Sadar Hospital in critical condition and died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was being transferred for further treatment. Police have launched an investigation.
