A court in Manikganj has sentenced eight defendants to life imprisonment in the closely watched 2009 murder case of Abdul Mojid Hiron. Each was also fined 20,000 taka, with a further six months in prison in default of payment.
Md Tasim Billah, judge of the Manikganj Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court, delivered the verdict Tuesday afternoon, August 25. The verdict was confirmed by state prosecutor and additional public prosecutor Bulbul Ahmed Golap.
The convicted defendants are Morjina, Falani, Mizan Khan, Rustam Khan, Sabuj Ahmed, Selim Mia, Anis and Rafiq.
According to the case’s first information report (FIR), Abdul Mojid Hiron of Raila village, Saturia, went missing on the night of October 7, 2009, after leaving home following prayers and a meal. His body was recovered the next day from a mahogany grove on the western bank of the Dhaleshwari river. The FIR alleged Hiron was strangled to death.
The court delivered its verdict after a lengthy trial process in which 17 witnesses testified. Seven other defendants in the same case were acquitted. Two other defendants died while the case was under way.
