A factional clash set off more than 100 improvised explosive devices — locally known as cocktail bombs — in Bahirandi village, Ghatmajhi Union, Madaripur Sadar upazila, on Thursday morning (June 25) at around 9am, sending panic through the area. Four homes were ransacked during the fighting and five people were injured; the injured were taken to clinics in Madaripur for treatment.

Police and local sources said a longstanding territorial dispute between two rival groups had been simmering, and members of both sides came armed to a confrontation on Thursday morning. Both groups set off cocktail bombs and ransacked homes on the opposing side.

Police arrived quickly and restored order. Additional officers were deployed to the area to prevent a fresh outbreak, the officer-in-charge of Madaripur Sadar Model police station, Abul Kalam Azad, said. “The situation is currently normal,” he said. “We have deployed additional police to prevent any fresh clash.” No arrests were immediately reported.
