A woman has been killed at her home in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah, and her son has been detained on suspicion of the killing after a dispute over money for drugs.
Shakher Banu, 57, was killed with a sharp weapon at Paschimpara in Shyamkur village early on Friday. Maheshpur police detained her son after the incident. He has not been charged, and the allegations against him have not been tested in court.
Local residents said the son used drugs and would ask his mother for money to buy them, which led to frequent quarrels between them. He asked her for money again on Thursday night, they said, and the two argued.
He is alleged to have entered his mother’s room in the early hours, killed her with a sharp weapon and fled.
Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Maheshpur police station, said preliminary information indicated the son had killed his mother following a dispute over drug use. The body was recovered from the scene and sent to the morgue. He was detained shortly afterwards beside a pond near the village.
