Tribunal takes up charges against eight over July uprising

The International Crimes Tribunal has taken into cognisance charges against eight people, including the former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor A S M Maksud Kamal, and Professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, in a case of crimes against humanity. Arrest warrants have also been issued against the absconding accused.

The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mazumder, gave the order on Sunday (September 20). The tribunal also ordered the former justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, the Dhaka University teacher A K M Jamal Uddin and the Chhatra League leader Tanbir Hasan Saikat to be produced before it.

The prosecution had earlier submitted a formal charge sheet at the registrar’s office of International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT) against eight people, including the former Dhaka University vice-chancellor A S M Maksud Kamal and the writer Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, over crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising of 2024.

The other accused are the Dhaka University professor A K M Jamal Uddin, the retired justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, the president of the banned Chhatra League Saddam Hossain, its general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan, the president of Dhaka University Chhatra League Mazharul Kabir Shayon and its general secretary Tanbir Hasan Saikat.

Of the accused, Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, A K M Jamal Uddin and Tanbir Hasan Saikat are currently in jail. The others are absconding.
