The performance of cabinet members has been under review inside and outside the government over the past six months, according to sources linked to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The sources said officials were assessing the pace of work across ministries, administrative effectiveness, public engagement and contributions to the government’s image. Ministers who became involved in what the sources called unnecessary controversies or failed to meet performance expectations were receiving particular attention.
The performance of 24 ministers and 24 state ministers is being evaluated, the sources said. They said the findings could lead to cabinet changes, redistribution of several major portfolios or an expansion of the cabinet.
Senior government officials are also discussing the possible inclusion of technocrats, additional advisers and experienced political figures, according to the report. Leaders with records of service and clean public images, along with younger members of Parliament, are also reportedly being considered.
Political sources said BNP Standing Committee members Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan and Selima Rahman were being discussed as potential cabinet members if they were not nominated for president or speaker.
Other names reportedly under discussion include BNP Media Cell Convener Professor Dr. Moudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel; Prime Minister’s Adviser and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi; BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal; parliamentary Whip ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan; and Rakibul Islam Bakul.
Sources also named leaders from allied and like-minded parties, including Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, member of Parliament Barrister Andaleeve Rahman Partho, Shahadat Hossain Selim and Revolutionary Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque.
Cabinet Division-linked sources said at least 12 ministers and state ministers currently held responsibility for multiple ministries. The government believed the extra workload was disrupting normal operations in some ministries, making portfolio redistribution a priority, the sources said.
Government sources said the review was considering progress on election-manifesto promises, efforts to resolve administrative complications, initiatives to reduce public hardship, control of field administration, the ability to make rapid decisions and active participation in Parliament.
An unnamed BNP Standing Committee member serving in the cabinet said several ministers were struggling to manage multiple ministries, while one or two state ministers were performing comparatively well and could become full ministers in a reshuffle. The member said members of Parliament and leaders from the BNP and like-minded parties could also join under the technocrat quota, but the prime minister would make the final decision.
