Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland are breaking records at a remarkable pace in the 2026 World Cup. Haaland scored twice on Sunday morning to eliminate Brazil, bringing his tournament tally to 7 goals in four matches.

The same total is shared by Mbappe, who has 7 goals in five matches, and Messi, who has 7 goals in four matches. It is the first time in World Cup history that three players have scored 7 or more goals in a single tournament. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, two players — Messi and Mbappe — achieved that feat.

The all-time record for most goals in a single World Cup belongs to France’s Just Fontaine, who scored 13 in six matches at the 1958 tournament. Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis scored 11 at the 1954 World Cup.

At the rate Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland are scoring, the record could be broken if any of them progress to the final. The trio’s prolific form has added an extra layer of intrigue to the knockout rounds.
