France’s victory over Sweden in the World Cup knockout round was expected, but the 3-0 win was defined by captain Kylian Mbappe’s record-breaking performance. The 27-year-old scored twice to guide his team into the round of 16.
With his two goals against Sweden, Mbappe’s total in World Cup knockout matches rose to nine — surpassing the previous joint record of eight held by Brazilian legends Ronaldo Nazario and Leonidas. Mbappe is now the sole holder of the record for most goals in World Cup knockout matches.
His tally in the current tournament has also risen to six, tying him with Lionel Messi for the top of this World Cup’s scoring chart.
Across all World Cup editions, Mbappe’s total now stands at 18 — just one behind Messi’s all-time record of 19 World Cup goals. If he maintains his current form, the French star could equal or surpass that record in the round of 16.
