As FIFA president Gianni Infantino promised, this 48-team World Cup has become the biggest in history. Along with more teams and matches, FIFA’s revenue and the prize money have also hit records. According to The Athletic, the total prize fund for this World Cup is $655 million, about 50 percent more than in 2022. In Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina, the winning team will receive $50 million and the runners-up $33 million. The third-placed team gets $29 million and the fourth $27 million, with set amounts allocated for teams knocked out in the quarter-finals, last 16 and last 32. Every team taking part is guaranteed at least $10.5 million.
FIFA hands this money to the countries’ football federations, which then distribute it among players, coaching staff and football development. FIFA’s revenue from this World Cup is estimated to exceed $10 billion. When prize money was first published in 1982, champions Italy received just $2.2 million; four decades on, the sum for the champions has risen to $50 million. After the final, the champions, runners-up and third-placed team will receive gold, silver and bronze medals, while the best player, goalkeeper and top scorer will be given the “Golden Ball,” “Golden Glove” and “Golden Boot” — though no extra money comes with these individual awards.
