Swedish ambassador meets Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman

The Swedish ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr Nicolas Weeks, has held a meeting with the Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, MP. The Swedish ambassador was accompanied by the embassy’s First Secretary, Ms Matilda Svensson, and the Second Secretary and head of the trade, politics and communication section, Ole Lundin. The meeting was held in a very cordial, friendly and warm atmosphere.

The meeting took place on Sunday at the office of the Leader of the Opposition in the National Parliament building. At the meeting, they discussed matters of mutual interest, including the overall post-election situation prevailing in Bangladesh, bilateral relations and investment between Bangladesh and Sweden, and international relations. Sweden’s firm support for Bangladesh in the future was conveyed, and both sides expressed the hope that Swedish investment in Bangladesh would increase further in the future.

The meeting also discussed the July Charter, the implementation of the referendum verdict and the possible consequences of the much-discussed ordinances. The two sides also exchanged views on the proposed budget, reform of the tax structure, an effective solution to the Rohingya problem and various Sweden-funded projects in Bangladesh.

The Leader of the Opposition’s foreign-affairs adviser, Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP, and a member of the foreign-affairs advisory committee, Ali Ahmad Mabroor, were present at the meeting.
